These 2" X 4" period correct 100% Wool Felt Rectangles are of the proper shade of blue and thickness for use as a stitched on backing for AAF Wings. Basically according to a verified letter to a serviceman's Mother in May 1943, this was new practice to discourage non flight status AAF personnel from pinning on wing badges to impress the ladies. It seems only 8th and 9th AF Flight Crew were authorized to do so. It was to be stitched on and many Theater Made bullion and embroidered wings were constructed directly into the felt.
